Choosing Workbench Lighting: Adjustable Lamp or Linear Shop Light?

Compare an adjustable task lamp with a linear shop light, including mounting checks and a manufacturer color-temperature discrepancy.

A lamp that follows a small assembly and a fixture that spreads light along a bench solve different problems. Comparing them by the biggest lumen number misses the useful question: where do you need the light, and what must remain clear around it?

Start with the lamp-positioning guide if you have not tried moving a suitable existing light. This guide takes the next step: choosing a fixture format and checking two exact examples before shopping.

This is a researched comparison, not a hands-on performance test. The research source links remain ordinary manufacturer or retailer links. The optional buying section below contains affiliate links; Garage After Hours may earn a commission.

Choose the shape of the solution

An adjustable arm makes sense when the work moves within a small area and you need to change the direction of the light. A linear fixture is a candidate when the task extends along a bench and you have an appropriate mounting location. Either can create glare or shadows in the wrong arrangement.

CCOHS distinguishes insufficient light, glare, contrast, uneven distribution and flicker in its lighting survey guidance. Its advice supports assessing the work from your normal position. A product's output rating does not establish the illumination on your particular bench.

IKEA TERTIAL: check the bench edge, not just the lamp

The dark-gray TERTIAL 203.554.34 has an adjustable arm and head. IKEA lists a clamping range up to 2¼ inches and a 4-foot-11-inch cord. The bulb is sold separately; the page recommends an E26 opal-white LED and lists a 13 W maximum.

Those are selection constraints, not proof of fit. A bench edge can be thin enough yet obstructed underneath by a frame or drawer. Check the mounting surface and movement against the assembly instructions. Do not assume the lamp is appropriate for damp, unusually hot or dusty conditions just because the bench is indoors.

The practical attraction is adjustment and a separately chosen bulb. The tradeoff is that the arm and clamp occupy space you may also need for the project. We have not measured arm stability, reach under load, glare, flicker or light on the work surface.

Feit SHOP/4/4000/840: useful specifications, one unresolved conflict

Feit's SHOP/4/4000/840 shop light uses integrated LEDs. Its specification sheet lists 4,000 lumens, 47.7-inch length, non-dimmable operation and damp-location rating. It is a plug-in fixture, not a hardwire model.

There is a color-temperature conflict: the page description says 5000K, while the specifications and sheet say 4000K. Confirm the exact package or obtain manufacturer clarification before ordering if color matching matters. We would not choose it to match existing lights until that is settled.

This format is a candidate for a longer work area with an appropriate mounting location. The rated output is not evidence of even coverage, low glare or comfortable brightness on your bench. Integrated LEDs also do not offer the same bulb-swapping choice as the TERTIAL. Follow the current fixture instructions for mounting and any permitted linking; a linkable label alone is not a connection plan.

Make a buying brief that can reject a product

Write one sentence naming the task and its changing footprint: “I assemble small models near the front edge,” or “I move along a long bench while laying out parts.” These are examples, not reports from a tested garage.

Then record the available mounting space, obstacles throughout the lamp's movement, distance to a suitable outlet and the conditions where it will operate. Copy any relevant limits from the exact model's instructions. If the setup needs new wiring or an uncertain electrical arrangement, have a qualified electrician assess it before buying around a guess.

Finally, list what would make you return or reject the fixture: reflections across the work, a lamp in your normal line of sight, insufficient reach, or a mount that conflicts with the activity. Keep the packaging and follow the retailer's actual return terms while checking fit.

Separate task light from after-hours atmosphere

The light that makes a garage inviting need not perform every job at the bench. Treat background lighting and task lighting as separate decisions. Check both from the working position and from the seat where you unwind.

The best first purchase may be no purchase. If your existing lamp works after a permitted adjustment, keep it. If it still falls short, shop from the specific failure you observed. That is a better brief than “make the whole garage brighter.”

A separate shop-light option to compare

Keep the original adjustable-lamp and linear-light comparison intact. After your trial, decide whether the remaining problem is directing light at a task or spreading it over a larger working zone. A broad suspended fixture and a movable lamp answer different questions; buying both is not the default.

The option below is Feit SHOP/4X2/840/V1. Its manufacturer sheet specifies a 4000K, non-dimmable white fixture. It is a distinct additional option, not SHOP/4/4000/840. The original model’s documented color-temperature discrepancy is preserved and still needs a fresh model-specific check.
